Yaaya Asked ...

What does social invisibility
mean to
you?

Obi (Facebook):
To me, to be socially invisible is to "be", but not to "exist" - To be drowned out by the sea of voices presiding over your chances, and limiting your choices. To be socially invisible is to lack real power or influence. To have no distinct identity. To live among a people, but not belong with them.

Loretta (Facebook):
The first thing that comes to the top of my head, is that social invisibility means to lack voice, or have issues, problems or concerns deliberately or accidentally ignored.

  2. Hi NN,

We agree - social invisibility does has the impact of making one feel like their voice doesn't have power or influence. It's almost like being able to pronounce the "sounds" of your thoughts, but your voice is being constantly muted by unfair generalisations, lack of representation in the media, and/or uncredited achievements.

Have you experienced social invisibility. If so, how has it made you feel and what helps you to overcome or deal with it?

    Yaaya
